Pregnancy is one of the most wonderful periods of a woman’s life, but it requires increased attention and specialized health care for the pregnant and child she bears.
The targets for tracking of pregnancy are associated with the preservation of pregnancy and care for the health of mother and fetus, prevention of complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. Tracking the pregnancy nowadays with a good prenatal care substantially improves the quality of your pregnancy and likelihood of giving birth to a healthy and full-term baby.
Fetal medicine clinic
The clinic has is located on the 10th floor of the University Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital “Maichin Dom”. It is equipped with two ultrasound machines, two obstetric monitors for fetal heart rate monitoring and has also one OR for one day surgery. The Clinic has two wards: Fetal Medicine Ward and One-day Ob/Gyn Surgery Ward.
Fetal Medicine Ward. It has very specific activities and is the only one of its kind in the country. All types of invasive prenatal diagnostic procedures are performed routinely in the Ward – amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling (CVS), cordocentesis. Some specific therapeutic procedures are also performed (for example selective embryo/fetal reduction). Patients with high risk pregnancies like recurrent miscarriages and preterm labor, inherited and acquired thrombophilias, intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), complicated multiple pregnancies, etc., are also treated here. The staff of the ward works in close cooperation with specialists from other leading institutions in the field of fetal medicine – the National Genetic Laboratory, the National Cardiology Hospital, etc.
One-day ob-gyn surgery ward. Operations, requiring short-time venous anesthesia, are performed here. They include termination of pregnancy up to the 12th week (on request and for medical reasons), cerclage placement, D&C procedures in non-pregnant women, etc.

The head of the Fetal Medicine Ward is Assoc Prof. Violeta Dimitrova, MD, PhD.
She has numerous specializations abroad (Israel, USA, UK) in fetal medicine, ultrasonography, fetal echocardioigraphy, etc. She is among the founders of the Bulgarian Association of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology (BAUOG), a member of its Executive Committee and executive editor of the Bulgarian Journal of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology. She is in charge for the education of 5th year foreign medical students in English.
